Omnilux Face Mask Before and After

No, it’s not my Halloween costume, but it certainly could be. After seeing LED light masks all over social media and doing my research, I added the Omnilux Contour Face Mask to my skincare routine. Light therapy has been in practice since the early 1900s when Dr. Niels Finsen was awarded a Nobel Prize for his work in the treatment a form of tuberculosis using concentrated light therapy.

Flashback to when LED lights came on the scene in the 1960s and their efficiency and efficacy have been proven in light therapy devices for the treatment of fine lines, acne, inflammation, and even wound healing. But before you go dropping upwards of $400 on this face mask, let’s look at the science behind red light led therapy in relation to anti-aging effects specifically using infrared light and red light.

Red Light Therapy for Signs of Aging

There are numerous clinical studies on red light therapy showing excellent results including the following:

  • Smoother skin texture
  • Reduction in appearance of fine lines
  • Reduction in appearance of pigmentation
  • Increased collagen production

This study used the gold standard in research conducting a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, split-faced clinical study to compare three different types of red light treatments. The results showed a combination of 830 nm and 630 nm red lights delivered the best results including up to 36% reduction in wrinkles and up to 19% increase in skin elasticity.

So how exactly do these wavelengths of light work to improve skin tone and turn back the signs of sun damage on our face, hands and decollete? One would think adding more light to the skin would cause more damage or even worse, skin cancer! Different wavelengths of light can actually excite skin cells within the treatment area, revving up collagen and elastin production, two proteins in the skin that take a nosedive as we age.

How the Omnilux Face Mask Works

Omnilux products combine near infrared and red light emitting diodes (LEDs) at specifc wavelenths of 633 nm and 830 nm. If you recall, those were the same combination of lights that achieved optimal results in the aforementioned mentioned study. The difference between infrared and red light is the infrared light penetrates deeper into the skin. This is because it has a longer wavelength between 700-1400 nm.

The longer the wavelength, the deeper it penetrates the skin. This explains near infrared light’s power as an instrument in accelerated wound healing as it stimulates the energy levels of fibroblast cells which can result in increased blood circulation. The red lights at 633 nm do not penetrate as deeply as infrared, but have been proven to be the most effective when combined with infrared light than alone for the softening of fine lines and a smoother complexion.

Is Omnilux the Best Face Mask?

In my research I found the Omnilux Contour FACE to be superior to other LED masks on the market for several reasons including:

  • US FDA approved for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Numerous clinical studies showing efficacy in reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Combination of both 633 nm and 830 nm wavelengths used
  • Manufactured by Globalmed Technologies, a trusted leader in medical-grade light devices
  • Flexible design is more comfortable and allows for closer contact to skin
  • Has 132 LEDs (66 infrared, 66 red)
  • Offers 2 year warranty – make sure you register your mask online after receiving (you’ll need the serial number from the box)

How To Use the Omnilux Contour FACE Mask

Seeing results from the Omnilux face mask does require using the device 3-5 times per week in 10 minute intervals for 4-6 weeks. It is recommended to continue use after that, but does not need to be as frequent. Per the Omnilux website, users don’t need any eye protection during use as the device conforms to the IEC/EN 62471 Photobiological eye safety standard.

Ensure your face is clean and product free before strapping on the mask. The mask has adjustable straps to tighten or loosen as needed. You can secure so it’s possible to walk around while masking if desired. The mask has a timer so once you’ve hit the button to start, it will light up for 10 minutes and then shut off automatically.

Overall it’s pretty comfortable to wear due to it’s flexible design. It doesn’t make your skin or body feel hot either. The red light is a bit surprising when it first turns on and you do look a little scary, but other than that, it’s painless and easy!

My LED Light Mask Routine

I have been using the Omnilux Contour mask for several months now and have noticeably reduced redness and dark spots. I believe I also see a subtle improvement in overall fine lines, but my pictures don’t show that very well.

Weekly Routine:

I use the mask on my face for 10 minutes each morning upon waking before I workout or apply any products to my face. I do this 5-6 days per week. I don’t use the mask at night as I avoid viewing bright lights in the evening in an effort to not disrupt my circadian clock.

After wearing the mask on my face, I place the mask flat on my upper chest area and run for 10 minutes as well. I’m too cheap to buy the chest mask right now and figure that any light therapy will do good to that sun damaged area. As you can see from the before and afters of my chest area, it is making a big difference!

I charge the mask at least once per week while I am not wearing it (that’s really important to not run the mask while charging it). I store the mask laying flat in it’s original box after each use. After a few uses, I wipe down the mask with a wet soft cloth or Water Wipes (you can find at Target).

I’d love to hear about your experience with any light masks or light therapy in general! Looking forward to sharing my results soon.
